I like having the different coloured gutter but need a few extra pixels to make it comfortable.
I miss this functionality and am trying to find a way to replicate it in emacs evil mode and would.

If there is a mark present and i m space the marks are cleared and the gutter is removed as wonderfully expected however when there are no marks present and i m space the gutter remains.

I m having a go at customising my vim setup before using it full time but one thing that s bugging me is the spacing between the text area and the number gutter.
The vim ex showmarks plugin visually displays vim marks in a file gutter something like this.
Modal text editing is a concept where the text editor can be in different states.
Your gutter will now show the name of the mark in orange.
To insert new text you d have to enter the insert mode then there s a visual mode when you re marking text etc.
